Spirit Versus the Flesh

II Corinth 5:17...Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature old things pass away behold all things have come new. Verse 21... He made him (him God the father made Jesus) to be sin for us (for what purpose?), that we might become the righteousness of God in him.

How many here really believe that Jesus died for your sins? If you said yes, then we are going to have to believe this last part of this scripture. That we might become the righteousness of God in him. For the 1st couple of years of my Christian life I really believed that Jesus died for my sins... But... I had a hard time believing the 2nd part of that scripture... That he made me the righteousness of God in him (Christ).

I couldn't see it. I was always taught that there was none righteousness... not even one. And that I was nothing... but filthy rags..and nothing but a sinner. But when I got saved it was by grace. But you know, there was a part of us, our old spirit that was corrupted at one time.

"And you he made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world. According to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sins of disobedience. Among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. (By grace you have been saved), and raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus..."

The word of God says that we were dead in our trespasses and sin... that word dead is translated meaning separation from God... And was trapped in trespasses and sin. In other words a dead spirit. But when we accepted Jesus Christ as Lord God takes away that dead spirit and gave us a new spirit.. His spirit. This is the part of us that is born again and is created in righteousness and true holiness. Eph 4:24 says "And put on the new self which in the likeness of God which has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth." This is a life changing scripture if you can believe this. This new spiritual man is righteous.. and is truly holy. 1 Corintheans 1:30 it says; "But of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God. And righteousness, and satisfaction, and redemption."

Jesus is my righteousness, my spirit is righteous. See.. this might be hard to grasp.. For some. Now wait a minute.. I've seen you do an unrighteous act. I heard you say something that didn't sound holy. Now you may have seen my body do something unrighteous, but you have never seen my new born again spirit do anything unrighteous. Because it is the righteousness of God in Christ! Remember our first 2 scriptures this morning.. II Corinth 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature old things pass away behold all things have come new.

Verse 21..he made him (him God the father made Jesus) to be sin for us (for what purpose?), that we become the righteousness of God in him. See.. we need to discern this.. How many times as born again believers have we come before God?

After we sin make a mistake.. fall short and cry out. Oh God I'm so unworthy, unholy, ashamed. Why would you ever want to use me now. I bet all of us have acted like that at least once. What we need is to realize that it's our body and soul our minds that are defiled. Not our born again spirit man. Now I'm fixin' to rock the boat. Our born again spirit man is not corrupted by our sins. Someone might be thinking about Hebrews chapter 6. We will address that in another teaching.

The part of us we are talking about this morning is our born again spirit which has been sealed, sealed by a promise by the holy spirit. Something that is sealed is preserved, which means: to keep in perfect condition.. Our born again spirit is not penetrated when we mess up. Now this is powerful.. we could go in 30 different directions with this but lets keep this really simple. Put away your feelings and let's just concentrate on God's word. Now I'm getting ready to say something that might throw all your previous religous teachings out the window..

If or when we sin.. it doesn't break our relationship with God. Because it says in John 4:24: "God is a spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." This part of us is not stained by your sin. We are sanctified and cleansed. Hebrews 10:10. "We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all." Verse 14 says: "Those who he has sanctified, he has preserved and made perfect for all time." We don't lose it every time we blow it. Our born again spiritual man is complete. Yea brother but sin has to be paid for, it was on the cross through the blood Jesus Christ once and for all.

See, our relationship with God is not broken when we sin because God is a spirit and he relates to our born again spirit man. Not to our physical bodies.. our souls that committed the sin. Now sin is very dangerous because it does hinder our walk with God. Because Satan attacks us in the body and the soul realm. He can't touch the spirit. The bible says in Romans 6:16 "Do you not know who ever you submit yourselves to, you become a slave to? Either to sin resulting in death (separation) or to obedience resulting in righteousness. What the writer is saying is: If we submit our emotions, our bodies, our thought life to the devil, then he will begin to dominate us. Even though God still loves us and we are in right standing with him in our born again spirit, we must be willing to submit to God's spirit and not the flesh.

When we submit to God's word we will see the power of God working in our lives. The word of God is the only thing that is sharp enough to separate the flesh from God's spirit. In other words right from wrong. Galatians 5:13 "For you brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, did you know that there are a lot of people who would fight you to keep their sin? They think that when we get out of line with God, he's going to punish us. That's not true. God does correct us but he doesn't punish us. There's a big difference! Yeah but what about the old testament? Well people in the old testament got zapped when they got out of line. Look at Miriam.. she spoke against her pastor (Moses) and the bible says that the leprosy of God came upon her.

That wasn't correction, that was just judgement.. punishment. Those were curses; we as born again believers according to Gals 3:16 says that Christ became a curse for us. Romans 8:1 "There is now therefore no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don't walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit." Yes God does correct us. Lets look at this in II Timothy 3:16-17 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." God doesn't correct us with sickness, poverty, trials, tribulations, or struggles. God's correction is in his word. See, religion teaches us that if we don't go to church 2-3 times a week that God will not be pleased with us.

I actually had someone tell me one time that God allowed their son to get into an auto accident. Because they were not going to church or paying their whole tithes. Well the good news of the Gospel is that we stay in right standing with God.. Not because of what we've done but because of what Jesus has done. II Cor 5:17.. Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new.. In ending, let me ask you something are you in Christ? One must be born again. Are you born again? Are you spirit minded or fleshly minded?
